The mechanization of grape harvesting led to developments (trellising) in grapevine training methods that quickly transformed the work of pruning and increased its cost. By 1989, Pellenc has developed a modular line of semi-automatic pruning machines that provided solutions matching the different working conditions in each region for each type of pruning and trellising. Our pruning heads have 2 drive shafts on which the pruning discs are mounted. The 2 discs arrays counter-rotate and drive the vegetation to the center of the machine: the mulching of the wood and the detrellising (collecting the vine shoots) are both performed mechanically.
The system As the tractor advances down the row, the 2 arrays can open up when they contact the trellising stakes and move around them automatically. A control is used to move the 2 arrays apart when entering or exiting a row.
The rotation speed of the pruning discs is matched to the tractor's forward speed to ensure trouble-free operation past the trellising and top quality mulching. The semi-automatic machines are robust and have low maintenance costs. They are safe to operate thanks to the low rotation speed of the pruning discs, and also reduce the pruning time by 20-40% depending on the vine training method. The discs and the blades
